Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!

I haven't had the opportunity to post anything over the past week. My wonderful, beautiful, best friend & sister is here in New Mehico with her two daughters. (I am making a vegan chocolate cake tonight since it's Hannah's 5th birthday, so there will be a new recipe up!) Since I still read all my favorite blogs (Jaclyn's Vegan Yumminess, SkinnyRunner, Better Together), I would like to share this wonderful giveaway from one of the most wonderful girls and best bloggers in the blogosphere, Living and Loving In L.A..

I don't know how I've never heard of Chia Seeds, but Chia Seeds Direct is giving away a 3-lb bag! I hope I win this generous giveaway so I can actually try them! But even if I don't, some lucky winner is going to reap the benefits of these little guys.

Vegan Facts

-Protein is good for you. Duh. Animal products (meat, eggs, etc.) have complete proteins, but so does a soybean. Which one do you think is better for you?

-It's actually better to get your calcium from plant sources such as figs, rice, nuts, dark greens, and soy foods. Osteoporosis occurs more when the calcium intake is via dairy products.

-Speaking of dairy products, a lot of people think milk is super important because of the need for Vitamin D. Did you know that milk is fortified with Vitamin D, meaning it doesn't naturally come with it?

-Studies show that a plant-based diet can increase your life expectancy by 7 to 15 years.

-Livestock feed is sprayed with pesticides and toxic chemicals. It's also packed with over 60 million pounds of antibiotics. AND, sometimes, the bovine growth hormone, which studies have shown cause early sexual maturation in children. (The average age girls are hitting puberty today is 8 years old.)

-A vegetarian diet can prevent 97% of coronary obstructions. That's impressive!

-Equally as impressive: Cornell University has been conducting a long-term study of health and diet. They found that 80 to 90% of all cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other forms of degenerative illness can be prevented by adopting a plant-based diet.

-Dr. Huckstable said "there's always room for 'this'"...which is made by boiling bones, skin, and other parts of cows. Uh, gross.

-Avocado is rich in potassium, folic acid, vitamin B6, and high in fat.....however, the amazing avocado contains enzymes that help break down fat in the body.
